Tech Support Questions

1) My labels are not printing properly. They are off by a fraction of an inch. What is going on?

Many older printers, particularly non-laser printers, don't always feed the paper the same way every time. Thus the printout could be off by a small amount. Even laser printers might print the label at a slightly different location depending on which paper tray you happen to be using, or if the paper is fed in at a small angle.

To fix this, nudge your text, picture or other graphic element within the print area. The best way to do this is print a label with some text and a background color and then measure how far off it is, and work from there.

Always test your labels on plain paper first, to keep from ruining your label stock.

2) How do I add graphics to a label?

Use the "Add Picture..." button. With QuickTime 4.0 or higher installed you can add BMP, FlashPix, GIF, JFIF/JPEG, MacPaint, Photoshop, PNG, QuickDraw GX Picture, PICT, QuickTime Images, Silicon Graphics Images, TGA and TIFF images. Older versions of QuickTime do not support as many formats. Should newer versions of QuickTime support more image formats then Mail Merge Pro will support them automatically.

If your graphics do not appear trying opening your graphics file with a program such as GraphicConverter, re-saving the file (which can correct corrupted image files) and then try adding your graphic files once again.

3) I am getting out of memory errors. How do I fix this?

If you are using millions of colors then switch to 16-bit (thousands of colors) using your monitors control panel. MMP tries to alert you when it runs out of memory but sometimes it cannot. Also, try increasing the program's RAM allocation by choosing "Get Info..." in the finder and increasing MMP's Preferred memory size.

You should never have to change MMP's memory allocation on Mac OS 9 unless you are getting errors since MMP automatically uses temporary memory when available.

Under Mac OS X you will not get any out of memory errors.

4) I read your answer to question #3 above and I switched my monitor to 256 colors (8-bit) to really save memory. But now I can't see the cursor very well in the text areas. Why not?

In 8-bit color the cursor does not show up very well on the gray background of the window. Using thousands of colors is a good compromise if you are running out of memory. Or just give the program more memory by choosing "Get Info..." in the finder and increasing MMP's RAM allocation.

5) I added a really large image and none of it is visible? How do the scaling options work?

When you add an image to a label, it appears at its original size, even if it is much larger than the label or the window. Theoretically if you add a very large image with a big area of white space in the middle you may only see that white space initially. You can drag the image using your mouse until you can see the resize handle on the bottom right of the image.

If your graphics do not appear trying opening your graphics file with a program such as GraphicConverter, re-saving the file (which can correct corrupted image files) or resizing and then try adding your graphic files once again.

6) When I choose print nothing happens. Why?

If you do not enter any text and only add a light background color, some black and white printers may interpret your background color as white and see a blank page. Therefore it may print nothing. Just add an image or some text to have it print out. This should not happen with color printers.

7) Can you add rotated text or graphics to the labels?

Not at this time. This may be added in a future release.

9) On Mac OS X, my icons still look like Mac OS 9 icons. How do I fix this?

If you have installed Mail Merge Pro in Mac OS X, rebuild your desktop file on all of your hard drives by holding down the Apple-Option key combination as your Mac starts up. This will allow you to see high quality Aqua icons for MMP.

10) In Mac OS X, I sometimes have problems seeing the graphic and text tools.

This is due to a known bug in OS X. We are working on a fix, and hopefully Apple is as well. In the mean time, clicking in the tool area will make the hidden tools visible.

General Questions

1) Does Mail Merge Pro support Mac OS X ?

Yes, Mail Merge Pro fully supports and runs natively in Mac OS X, and Mac OS 9.x. It is a "Carbon" application. There is also a Classic version for those running 8.x+.

2) I am registered user of an earlier Label Printer Pro. Is there a discount for buying the new Mail Merge Pro?

Mail Merge Pro is not an upgrade to the LPP series, and as such it does not qualify for an upgrade. MMP is a completely new program with very different functionality than LPP6. As always minor updates of Mail Merge Pro will be released FREE of charge. We only for major revisions, and we do not have any revisions planned for MMP at this time.

3) Why does LPP6 have a number when MMP doesn't?

The first Label Printer Pro was released by Pay&Play Software in 1996. It has been through 6 major revisions. While this is the second full revision of the Mail Merge Pro code, it is our first release. The use of numbers as part of the application's name is a dubious practice, but for some reason with LPP6 we just liked the way it sounded, and it stuck.
